Procrastination Friday and new stuff too

To be honest, I'm not sure what the purpose of this is... but it is addicting... be warned!

Play Games at AddictingGames

I would also like to introduce you to a new feature on Friday's: The History of Erotica

Erotica and erotic romance is definitely nothing new. I would like to introduce you to some erotica artists.

Pietro Aretino (1492-1556) has been called the inventor of modern literate pornography. He wrote I Modi. or "The Ways." This is sometimes referred to as "16 Positions" as it combines sixteen sexually explicit sonnets with sixteen engravings.

I was unable to find any examples of the text online, but the book is available.

Books on Writing Fiction

I read a lot of books... I'm sure you can well imagine. I don't believe you can be a writer without being a reader.

I also enjoy books about HOW to write, and have read many. But my favorite -- by a mile -- is "On Writing" by Stephen King. I can't recommend this one enough for sheer inspiration.

The first part of the book is his writing journey. The second is some truly nuts-and-bolts advice. Stephen King doesn't mince words, he tells it like it is.

Want proof? Check this out:

And, if you haven't already... go read his book. In fact, I think I'm going to grab it and read it again.

A Top 10!

I am emotionally battered this week, so you won't get much of my wit or ... sarcasm today. I decided that since my brain wouldn't leave some things alone I needed to just do a simple blog. It started as a top ten that I took from another author's blog... and morphed. What she originally had on her blog is first and in italics and bold. What came after... that's me. So, here it is:

The Top Ten Ways You Know You're an Author

10. You narrate your own life. Your narrator sounds strangely like your critique partner/brainstorming friends/sibling.

9. You hear voices in your head and the only way to silence them is to tell their story. You not only hear the voices in your head, you speak to them as though they were standing right in front of you. Or, they can scare you half to death on the freeway when they jump up and say, "Hey, I drive one of those..." or "YES! THAT'S what I do for a living!" Sheesh, drive a girl off the road.

8. The best way to become your friend is to tell you they love your work. And that no one could possibly measure up.

7. The best way to become your enemy is to criticize your work. Even when we told you to be brutally honest. I never said we made sense, now did I? Or if you choose to snicker at the genre we choose to write.

6. You are rejected more now than you ever were in high school. At least when you finally get up the guts to finally submit.

5. Your daily mood directly correlates to your word count. And to how much you talk to yourself out loud where people other than your characters can hear you.

4. The blinking cursor has become your nemesis. If you had a way to kill it you would. And you'd make sure the death was as slow and excruciating a process as staring at that blinking cursor can be.

3. You spend more time with imaginary friends than real ones (and you're fine with that!). You can fix their lives when they make you make them go in the wrong direction... you can fix it.

2. If you're not writing you're wishing you were. Even when you are driving, cooking... sleeping.

And the number 1 reason: 1. For you, writing falls into the same category as breathing, eating and sleeping (those last two being optional). And completely unecessary in my book. LOL

So, I hope you enjoyed, I'm working on another list "You know you're a Published Author if.....

So, that's it for today. Will see y'all again, real soon I hope.

PROMO OP: Guest Blogging

We Wild Women will be hosting a guest blogger on this blog each Monday, beginning soon!

If you're interested in being a guest on our blog, please feel free to choose a couple of
open dates (in case your first choice is taken) and send us an email with your dates and a subject, if you know one.

The only thing we ask is that the post is actually about something. It can be about nearly anything at all, we're not terrifically picky, but ... we'd like it to have a subject.

Friday Procratination

I am late late late. I'm on the coast and drunk on the smell of the ocean; caressed by the breeze coming onshore; enjoying myself entirely too much.

So..while y'all are being jealous, you can play this timewasting game. Have fun.

I'll be back next week with not only a new time waster, but some other interesting things :-)

I Love Writer's Prompts

I am frequently stymied in the middle of my WIP ... and there are times I can't just stop writing (I like to do writing challenges like BIAW or NaNoWriMo) and word count really matters, so I'll find prompts. Or, with NaNoWriMo, I'll visit their Plot Doctoring message board.

I've found prompts on Paperback Writer's blog.

Writer's Digest offers several.

Writing Fix has tons of different prompts.
And, in a pinch, I've gone to Wikipedia and clicked on random
article and then incorporated whatever comes up into my story in some way (this one can be really tough -- try it sometime!).

I really think prompts, especially outlandish ones, can get the juices flowing and make the brain start thinking outside the box, or at least outside the page.

What about you? Do YOU like using writing prompts?
