Submitted...

I finally sent in another submission a week ago. It's a short story with the working title "Her Handyman" and is a friends to lovers story which is one of my favorite tropes.

In fact, I'd sure love some suggestions of erotic romance stories with a friends to lover plotline. I haven't read one in I can't remember how long.

Who wants to share?

Here's a movie with that trope that I (and maybe ten other people) enjoyed back in 1997:

In fact, just watching the trailer makes me want to see it again...

So, heck, I'll take movie suggestions, too!

Anyone?

I Did the Deed...

Ok, the first time I started this post, it said "I Did the Dead". Kealie fell over laughing. "You loon...you do the dead all the time."

She'd be right. And it proves that I can't type for a diddly.

So about the Deed...

I sent Permanent off into the world. It's exciting and scary. Exciting because it's out into the world to someone other than Kealie, the crit partners, and my own brain. Scary as heck because I've had a nasty case of the what if's...

What if it's not good enough? What if it's laughed at? What if readers won't accept it? What if I poured my heart into these characters for no reason?

Ugh. No wonder my published friends talk about their Tums intake...I am so there.

Thoughts? This is my first submission...I'm skeered.

Oh and hey, while I'm thinking about it... I'm following Mysti on Whipped Cream on April 30th for the Spring is Bustin' Out All Over fest!! Join us. You could win a Nook!

Choices, Choices...

So I'm trying to decide where I want to send my submission. It's still waiting for a little more polish and such, but I'm wondering what pub is the right one for me, and for it.

Plus a little tiny part of me is scared to death to send it in. I had a good friend tell me, well, you never know until you send it. Go with your gut and just see what happens.

So why does this scare me? Because I've seen what another friend has been through. She had a sub she thought was spot on and it was rejected. Sure, it had been a resub, but it was still kicked out. Is it spot on? I thought so. I mean, I read it, was drawn in, and wanted to know what would happen.

Will people think that with mine?

I dunno.

Thoughts? The knees are a-quakin'. I'm open for suggestions, comments, advice, whatever you can throw at me (as long as it doesn't hit me in the head.)

Family, Feelings and Funny Happenings

I've been sitting here trying to figure out what to write about today. And honestly nothing was coming to me. Still no news on my Cowboy story that I sent off to another publisher. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I can't stay in a state of constant... freaking out, lol. So, I check my emails a little less... hmmm... neurotically, and I hope for the best and work on my other stuff.

This week I have had family in town. And while I love and adore my family, they are a loud, rambunctious group of emotional vampires. I love being around them, but by the time I get home... I'm exhausted and ready for bed. Now imagine doing that over and over again for an entire week and then having the spector of the in-laws coming into town for a big birthday for one of my children and you'll see what my life is right now.

Among the chaos, there is fun and laughter and downright silliness... especially when you get members of my rather large Irish/German family (on my mother's side) in one house. It blows people's minds when they see all of us together, but they soon start to believe me when I say, "I'm the quiet one." No, really, I AM the quiet one. Those of you who know me are rolling your eyes, "Uh huh.... suuuuuuure you are, Kealie!" But once you see my entire family in action... it starts to make sense.

The night before last we had about 25 family members (Yes, they were ALL related to me in one way or another) gathered in my parents' house. We honestly don't need a reason, but add the fact that my sister who doesn't live here came down for a visit with her husband and children, and we have ample reason to gather and wreak havoc.

This time, there seemed to be a bit of a... passing of the flame if you will. For years my family has played a game called May I. It's a... "bastardized version" of Gin Rummy (according to my sister). We've been playing this card game for as long as I can remember. As children we watched our parents and listened to them howl and holler at each other when someone took a card they wanted or skunked the whole table by going out and leaving the others with hundreds of points in their hands. As we got older we were slowly taught the game and after the first hand you won... you were on your own. As each of us has grown into adulthood, we've progressed and excelled at the game until we had to have our own table of cards away from the adults.

At this family get-together, only the younger generation played the game, while the older generation stood by and commented or talked amongst themselves. So, me, my one cousin, my other cousin's fiance, my sister, her husband and the baby of the family, my youngest cousin who just turned 18 last month set about playing our own game of May I. Slowly, the volume grew (nothing new in a large family) and the older generation started to make some... complaints. "You're getting too loud over there!" Which would set the rest of us at the table off into paroxisms of laughing... remembering some of the more heated games of recent memory between those same people.

We did our best, but really, we're family and we enjoy poking fun at each other. My brother introduced us to his pregnant wife that night (no I had never met her before, and no we weren't invited to the wedding... things were a bit strained at first). And then convinced her that she needed to join in the game. Since the girl comes from a family of six, where she was the only girl, we figured she could handle us. At one point, she looked at the other five of us at the table and asked, "Are you sure you aren't siblings?" Considering that she was married to one of my siblings and one of my other siblings was at the table with her husband we were a bit confused. "Who?" And she pointed between me and my cousins. We had to laugh... "Well, we might as well be. We were raised more as siblings than as cousins." And that explains it all. We were raised more as siblings, we were there for every major event, we were there every month for the family get together, we were there for weddings, birthdays and baptisms... and even though there are times when I want to bang my head against the wall... I wouldn't trade that for anything in the whole entire world.

Now you're wondering what in the world this has to do with writing... nothing... and everything. My family is the reason I believe in Happy-Ever-After. I saw on a daily basis parents and aunts and uncles who shared their love with the rest of us. I watched my mother and father kiss in public and hold hands and have seen the same from my aunts and uncles. It taught me the kind of love I deserved, and I refused to settle for less. My family is the reason I can look at my cousin who has yet to find a man willing to take on a single mother with some issues and think, "Someday, I'll write her story." Because I love her, and want her happy, I will be there when she does find her One and I will share in her joy.

When a character pops into my head, I can honestly say that they have quite a bit of my family in them... whether it's a stubborn determination to refuse to settle... or a spunky heroine who feels no shame in the shape of her body because she had a family of big beautiful, women with curves. Our life experiences mold our writing. They speak to us, and through us, and go out into the world as an example of who you are and what you believe. I hope that I can make a reader laugh the way my family makes me laugh... I hope that I can put forth that emotion that I learned at the feet of the women in my family who never gave up and never took no for an answer, and in the process they raised some pretty spectacular friends that I am lucky enough to call family. That's the feeling I want to put in my stories. I'm sure you'll let me know if I fail at that, lol. :-D

Anyway, everyone have a beautiful Tuesday. I'll be hiking Valley of Fire with my family and storing away more memories to bring out and look over again... but not until it quiets down a bit around here. LOL

The Waiting is KILLING me!

Right now, I am utterly terrified. And not in the "It was a dark and stormy night..." sort of way either. That's a tale for another day, lol. No, right now I am going through what every author I know, and have talked to personally goes through. I just sent my Cowboy story off to another publisher for consideration this last weekend.

So, from the moment I hit "send" and watched it disappear into cyberspace I have felt that overwhelming urge... to puke. I obsess... why are you rolling your eyes? Yes, crazy, Southern, annoying me obsesses... stop rolling your eyes! Several of my crit partners and author friends are probably laughing their collective asses off at me right now. THEY know just how much I obsess over every little thing. "Did I put enough of this in there? How about less of that? What do you think?" and usually their response is, "I'm sure it's wonderful, so KNOCK IT OFF!"

I had already subbed this to another publisher once and they basically said, "You have a wonderful voice, and I really want to take this one but this just isn't hot enough for us." Devastating... but helpful all at once, as they didn't say, "You suck, never send to us again!" So I truly have no ill feelings toward that publisher, I love them and their editors were a joy to work with. No, I'm not kissing ass... sheesh.

I think my terror this time around comes from the fact that this is the second time I've sent this baby out into the world. Granted, I've added quite a bit of content that wasn't there before. The original incarnation was approximately 11,000 words... it's now over 18,500 words. I'm hoping that means better dialogue, conflict and... heat. :-D

But still... it's the waiting ... I am not, even on my better days, a patient person. I want to know something within days... not weeks much less months. And I know this anxiety is going to be eating me alive until I get a response one way or the other. I've tried burying myself in edits of another story I've finished, but I'm not sure that's helped much... since I haven't done much editing on it, lol.

So, if y'all could just... I dunno, cross your fingers for me? Give me some advice or ideas on how you get through the waiting period? I'm driving my family barmy by constantly checking for an email that I know it's not feasible to see yet. Does anyone have any ideas how to keep me from going insane or flipping myself out? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Round Two

Ever feel like this?

Alright, I'm not really sick, but I sort of feel sick. "Why?" you ask. Well, because I finally finished the requested revisions to my Cowboy story (now with the working title of Claiming Her Cowboy btw) and resubmitted it to The Wild Rose Press.

Thus, the sick feeling. Yes, I made their suggested revisions, but that doesn't mean they're gonna like it and want to keep it. So, while I wait on pins and needles my tummy has decided to flip and flop and generally give me grief. LOL

I'll definitely keep y'all updated. And (fingers crossed) hopefully soon I'll have my very own little book cover over there on the right next to Mysti's! Wish me luck, keep your fingers crossed and I'll let y'all know what happens. :-D

Not Quite There... Yet

Photobucket

So, I received a reply from The Wild Rose Press in regards to my submission of Claiming Her Cowboy. No, I don't have a contract, but it wasn't a complete rejection either.

Basically, they liked it, think I'm headed in the right direction, but I need to make some revisions. I don't have enough conflict... which is frustrating because I already added quite a bit more conflict than was there before. My good friend Marianne laughed at me... but in a nice way. LOL. She said, "You're so sweet, you don't like to torture your babies." Then she quoted another author, "But, you have to hang your hero from a cliff and pelt rocks at him, otherwise you're doing your manuscript a disservice." Okay... pelt rocks at him... *sigh* I think I can do that.

But, honestly, I am really okay with this. I'm not bummed, I'm actually hopeful. They didn't send me a "Your work sucks, please don't send us anything else" letter. They were very nice and gave me quite a few helpful ideas and thoughts. I've got two months to do the revisions and send it back to them... as Wendi would say, "Back to my bat cave."

Wish me luck.

I Did It...

Photobucket

I finally sent off a query letter and synopsis. Yup, that's right. Cowboy, which has now morphed into "Claiming Her Cowboy", has been submitted to The Wild Rose Press, Scarlet Rose line.

Can I tell y'all something? I felt like I was going to puke when I hit that send button. A couple of my author friends have told me THAT doesn't get better. JOY, something to look forward to! LOL

So... anyone wanna hold my hand? But, seriously, I'll keep y'all updated. :-D

The End?

So... a couple weeks ago, I submitted a short story "Love Your Enemy" to a small press. I submitted it because I thought it was ready. But in the days since, I've been obsessing about it, certain I could make it better, stronger, faster than before...

er...

Maybe just better.

I keep thinking about places I could ramp up the tension or make the sex even hotter. Places where the characters could be stronger, the descriptions deeper, the story more interesting.

It's driving me crazy.

And part of me hopes the editor will reject it so I CAN do those things (though, I suppose it's possible she'll let me do them even if she does contract it). It's frustrating, because I read through every word of that story dozens of times to make sure I was really ready to send it off and now I'm second-guessing myself.

When IS a story finished? Or, maybe it would be more appropriate to ask, IS a story ever finished?
