Talking Characters

I know I say this all the time, but I'm behind. I know. It's not an excuse any longer. Phooey. I really don't have a lot of time.

So I was trying to sleep and my characters decided that was the time they all needed to talk at the same time. Sleep? Yeah, I didn't get any. And they had to *all* talk at the *same* time. I have a hard enough time figuring them out individually, let alone in a gang. Sheesh.

Do your characters do that to you? Or do they have pesky things they do just to drive you to the brink?

I'm gonna try to head back to the batcave. I have a couple of gay men yearning for me to stop writing their story in the notebook and finally get it onto the computer.

Wish me luck.

Calgon...Take Me Away

Sounds like I'm whining, doesn't it? Haven't you ever wanted a bubble bath, the kind where you can literally sit in piles and piles of bubbles and know that no one is coming in to bother you, there's a stock of chocolate covered strawberries and something sparkly by your side, and you can stay there until you get nice and prune-y....

Well, I want to. Know where I can?

Didn't think so.

It's thundering outside. If you've never read my MA bio...the dirty version, you'd know I love thunderstorms, as long as the boys are nearby. Keep me safe and you can have your way...ok, well, you have to be one of my three. And it figures, it's nowhere near bedtime...for me or them. They've been out a while now. **Sigh**

Think I'll find some nice scenery to encourage my muse. Kealie's been gone so much that the muse has receeded into herself. He won't even come to the door. Punks. Our muses seem to feed off each other...funny since I have a male and a female muse, they LOVE Kealie's muse and I swear they have threesomes without telling us.

But what can I say? She's my bff and they are all whatever they are. I guess I'll get the yummy scenery now and write a bit.

Perfect...a man's nekkid ass and it's a fine sight....**le sigh**

Theadora Midway

Got your attention didn't I? If for no other reason than to wonder who the heck Theadora Midway happens to be.

Well, I'll tell you.

I happened to be talking to Kealie about porn names. Since neither of us has participated... we wondered what our porn name would be. Now I won't be so gauche as to give away my formula, but the name I came up with for me?

Theadora Midway.

Yanno, it actually opens up to many possibilities. How? Well... She's in the middle! Men, toys, situations, doesn't matter... she's your girl.

Okay, so that sounds really bad.

What else sounds really bad? When authors want original names for their characters, but they use names that sound...dirty.

I won't name any names, but yeah, there are some real winners out there. Not that my character names are any better. Ryan, Christorin, Clover, Juniper, Samara... nice and somewhat unique, but not so out there that people say, gee... I know what she watched while she wrote (well, they have no proof anyway).

But the boys want my attention. Ta!

Be An Individual

Your Fashion Style is Girly

You dress to look beautiful and show off what you've got

Dresses, skirts, heels... whatever it takes to turn heads

You love feeling like a girl in any setting

Even your workout clothes are cute and feminine!

What does this have to do with me and my writing? Not much, lol. Okay, I can figure out some way that it relates... somehow...

Anyway, the reason it came up was because of an experience I had with a good friend of mine. She is someone who is much more comfortable in jeans and t-shirts, but occasionally, she needs to dress up. So... we went shopping, and she dragged me along, cuz she doesn't do shopping very well. We ended up having to take two trips. But, that's beside the point.

A comment she made about my style and taste in clothing made me stop and think. I wear what I like, end of story... at least as far as I'm concerned. It could be something that others find trendy, or it could be something funky that caught my eye. I started thinking on how each character I write is as different from another as night is from day. I'm rather eclectic in my characters as well, or at least I seem to think so. :::shrugs:::

Spending time with my good friend reminded me that every story has the good friend, the secondary character. Yet in my mind they always end up with their own story and the main characters... become the secondary characters. Does that make sense? Each of my characters is an individual, just as each of my friends are individuals. I hope each time I pen a story that I've described a new character and that I'm not just regurgitating the same heroine over and over and over again. :::gag:::

I know that a bit of myself makes it into each heroine... but I just started to realize recently that my friends and family show up a bit in each of my secondary characters, who eventually become main characters in their own love story. My friend who is much more comfortable in blue jeans and sweats and has a total of three pairs of shoes is just as interesting as my friend who is up to date on all the latest fashions and has more shoes than even I think one can wear. (I know Megan and Mysti are laughing here) The main point is that each one is an individual, just as each character I write is an individual. I'm sure if each of my characters took that test up above... each one would have a different result. In the end, I just hope I can do them justice and let them be individual.

How about the rest of you? Do you ever struggle with making your characters each distinct and individual? Have you ever noticed that you DON'T succeed?

Late... It's my Gift

I know, I'm late again. It happens. As the boys would say, it's my gift.

What was I up to? I'd like to say I was caught up in some delicious story of romance and hot lovin'. Sadly, no. I had to work.

Seems like sometimes the times my characters want to just shout the next part of their story, that's when I just don't have the time to get it down. Thank Goodness I have my notebook. But still, why do they choose the moments when I can't write their story to annoy me?

Because they can. It's true. My pesky vampire character keeps niggling me with his decision for the lady in his life. And let me tell you, he's persistent.

So I'm off to work on his story since my work for everything else is more or less finished.

Ta ta!

How Did They Know?

Okay, we authors are always talking about how our characters take over, or how they tell us something and all of a sudden things just make sense.

Well, aside from revisions and edits to two finished WIPs, I am in the middle of writing a story that involves shifters. Shifters that I have thought were wolves this entire time. Some of y'all will remember a certain flash-fiction that I did that started the whole Alpha shifter story that includes a pretty hot menage. (No, that's not in the flash-fiction, but it's hinted at.) Anyway... I sort of hit a spot that just sat there... and sat there... and went stagnant. I couldn't figure out why I was so unable to continue and why the characters seemed to be so uncooperative. Now, I've heard some authors say that there is no such thing as the characters taking over, or telling you what to write; that it's all the subconscious. Umm... even if it is, it explains the voices that demand to be heard. Leave me my illusions please.

So, here I am turning on my computer and staring at the blinking cursor wondering why I can't get the words to come. Why aren't their characteristics and behaviors easier for me to get down? Yeah, the little buggers were letting me stew... the alpha very quietly harrumphed (with his Irish accent) and informed me that perhaps the reason I couldn't get them down was because I had the wrong species of shifter down. "We aren't dogs, m'dear. We're cats." Well... excuuuuuuuuse me, but to my knowledge there weren't big cats in Ireland, so how the hell was I gonna explain that one? He just smiled and wandered off to torment his queen.

Today, I figured, "Hey, I'll just see if there is anything to this whole big cats in Ireland thing." and plugged it into that handy-dandy Google box. You should have seen the shock on my face when article after article popped up on the screen. I even found an entire site devoted entirely to the study and investigation of big cat sightings in Ireland. We're talking sightings of leopards, tigers, and even a lion or two. I don't ever remember seeing any articles about this before, so it leaves me wondering how my CHARACTERS knew it before I did.

Now, after reading some of these articles my muse took off running and things are moving along and making sense. And of course my characters are much happier now that I've stopped calling them "dogs" and started calling them kitties... Okay, they don't like kitties much either, but they agree it's better than dog.

How about you? Has that ever happened before where your characters seemed to know something before you did? How do you deal with it? Do you just go with the flow?

Guest Blogger ~ Belinda McBride

Today our guest blogger is Belinda McBride. Her book, Imperative: Saving You, released last week... but I'm blonde. We'll leave it at that. Let's all give Belinda a warm welcome!

A CHARACTER IN SEARCH OF A STORY

“Rumor has it you’re my replacement.”

Those were Jason Anders’ first words to Marilyn in Imperative: Always You. He was the villain, the source of the conflict between our hero and heroine. Jason was the scorned lover, the temptation that pulled Neil from the arms of his Imperative lover. Jase was a manipulative bastard. He was a masochist more than willing to hurt his partner in order to receive the pain he needed to in order to function. Jason was not a very likable character at all.

Well, to my surprise, Jase was not happy with being the bad guy in the book. He wrenched the plot from my hands and threatened to take the story in the direction he saw fit. He certainly had a strong effect on the story, to the point that Always You wound up being an emotional roller-coaster, both for the author and for the reader.

Jason Anders had something to say, and he forced me to listen.

Normally, I build my characters carefully, but for some reason, Jase simply evolved on his own terms. His words came spontaneously, and it was very clear that at the end of Always You, he was waiting for his story to be told. Jase needed to explain the grief that drove him to such terrible extremes.

I started writing Saving You in early September, confident that it wouldn’t take long at all. By October, I was struggling, re-writing, and searching for the balance to his story. Dove was there from the start, she made her first appearance at the end of the previous book. But for some reason, Dove wasn’t enough to save Jason. Someone else was there. Someone who insisted that his story be told. It was a bit character who appeared in the very beginning of the book. An anonymous masked man who was obsessed with saving Jase. He was a hero with enough heart to save the story.

Weeks passed with little progress on the book. I was two weeks behind…three weeks…
I searched name books and online databases trying to figure out who this John Doe really was. When I found the Hindu word for peaceful, Arav Jain stepped off the page and right onto the cover.

Am I a plotter or a pantster? That’s a question that comes up often, and I usually say that I’m both. I plot, but when a character steps up in search of his or her story, I listen. Saving You wasn’t easy to write. The pivotal hero is an emotional cripple. He’s so deeply entrenched in depression that he seeks to end his own life. In spite of this, I didn’t want his story to be dark.

There was one more unusual thing about Jason’s story. The Imperative wasn’t there to save him. He wasn’t going to get the golden ticket to Paradise. There was no biological compulsion to force him into the perfect relationship.

In his story, Jason Anders has to save himself.

Imperative: Saving You by Belinda McBride is currently available at Changeling Press

In the future, we don’t choose our mates; Nature chooses for us. Nature doesn’t make mistakes. And if you don’t pay attention to Nature’s Imperative, you suffer.

All he wanted was peace. Eternal peace.

After the death of his Imperative mate, Jason Anders threw himself into a lifestyle of sexual excess and self-punishment. Just when he thought he’d hit rock bottom, Jase was nearly killed in a brutal attack.

Nature listened to Jason’s plea for peace, and gave him what he asked for. But Nature’s version of peace wasn’t exactly what Jase expected.

When Dr. Dove Sinclair stumbled into his life, Jase began to suspect that within her arms, he might find the will to live. And when he looked into the haunting eyes of a mysterious masked man, Jason realized that Nature wasn’t finished screwing with his life.

Sometimes Nature doesn’t play fair. But at least she’s willing to give Jason a second chance.

Mysti on Menage

Hi! I'm Mysti Holiday, the only member of the Menagerie without a Cabana Boy. I may have to remedy that at some point.

I live where it's cold most of the year and dream of the tropics. This is where DH wants to be, and I suppose love means never being able to get warm if your sweetheart asks it of you.

Thankfully I have a very vivid imagination. I need one, because you see, I have a confession to make. Aside from this writing group, I've never been part of a menage IRL.

Yes, it's TRUE.

Here's the problem, though.

I'm writing this story right now that involves a husband and wife and I knew how I wanted it to end when I started it... but now, NOW, the characters are telling me I might consider a menage.

WHAT??

Um...no, that wasn't part of the story. That may work in other stories, but not this one. THIS story is about how a monogamous couple finds their way back from the brink of divorce. How does involving another person in their relationship work with that?

I've been fighting them on it, and as a result the story just isn't getting done. I'll sit down to write, and nothing happens. I go to type and they say... "Uh, hello... we told you what we need to resolve all our issues."

What's a girl to do? I still don't want them to be unfaithful, despite the fact they've given me permission to include another person in their sexual relationship. So, I'm looking for a compromise... and I think I may have found one. Tune in tomorrow and see if my word count widget moves.

I have high hopes.

What about you? If you're an author, what do you do when you have everything planned out and your characters throw a wrench into things? Do you revise your ideas in their favor, or do you force them to listen to you, their creator?

Words to Make You ... Blush!

Hi everyone, I'm going to formally introduce myself. Some of you have seen my Saturday Hottie post, and I did appreciate your appreciation! LOL

I am Kealie Shay, and I am the third in this ... AHEM... menage.

I really wasn't sure what I was going to blog about today. As I'm just starting out in this great big wide world of writing, I'm not always sure of the direction I'm heading in. I know what I like, and I know what my characters say to me. But they aren't always so helpful when it has to do with writing about ME.

I have to say right now before it seems that I am fearless, that I DO have a hard time writing the "f" word, the "p" word and all the other "" words. I'm sure that as I get further along in my writing career it will get easier... okay, I'm HOPING it will get easier. But, as of right now, it's really not something that I excel at... no matter what I tell Mysti! I don't start out with the words in my work, I can't, I start typing and my fingers ssssttttuuuutttterr on those words... so I leave them out of my first draft. I really don't know what else to do. Yep, it's true... As I write, I just put in the flowery term or the first word that comes to mind as I'm going (which sometimes doesn't make any sense when I go back and reread it). When I go back through for my first edit I add the HARD words to my work. Does that make me silly? Does that make me a wimp? I don't really care, as long as it works for me! And isn't that part of our journey as writers? We try, and we tweak, and we find what works for us.

So, if you're a writer of Erotic Romance, or Mainstream Romance or you just have a character with a potty mouth I have questions for you: What do you do when you sit down to write and you know that your character is thinking the word, but you just can't get your fingers to type it? Or, do you even have that problem at all? If you DID have that problem... does it get any easier as you move forward in your career?
