Never Saw it Coming...

I sat down to write this post and wasn't sure initially what to write. I mean, I start these things on Monday and add a little bit here and there until it's Thursday and I think: OH CRAP! I've gotta get this done!

This week was a little different. I never saw this coming. I should pay more attention, but I didn't. I didn't realize Under and Over It was on AllRomance Ebooks. Or rather, I saw it had popped up on ARe and hoped for the best. I promo it and Love the story, but there's only so much you can do without beating people over the head with promo. I'd like to think I'm one of those folks who promos, but not so much that people see my emails and hit the DELETE key.

Permanent released on ARe this week as well. Monday actually. So here's what I never saw coming... both Under and Over It and Permanent both became bestsellers on ARe. THANK YOU READERS!!! Really. I'm stoked. I had no idea. I love both books and enjoyed writing them, so I'm glad others are getting to read those books.

Want to head to ARe to get your copies?
Permanent
Under and Over It

It's pretty humbling to have someone email you and say, have you looked at the product pages? You should look. As I've said, don't get me wrong - I think both books are fantastic, but to end up where they have? That's pretty exciting and a little scary. What if I can't follow up the stories with just as good ones? What if it's a fluke? Yeah, just a little stress.

Okay, so I'm going to go back to the bat cave to work on follow ups. :-) Thanks for reading.

Monday Author Interview with Candace Blevins

I would like to welcome the fabulous Candace Blevins to the blog today. It would appear Kealie got lost along the way or ended up with the CBs somewhere else. All I can say is, I hope she’s having fun. Now Candace, grab a smooth drink, a hot CB to use for a lap and...

I'm here, I'm here!!! :::running through the door::: Seriously, the cranky one was grumpy and wanted to be loved on... then I had to push my hubby out of the way and feed the baby, lol. I'm so sorry I'm late! :::slipping out of heels and plopping down next to Megan::: There's my CB with a drink. Thank you so much for stopping in to hang out with us, let’s get this interview started. How much of the book is realistic?

My stories are fiction, but the BDSM scenes are realistic. I’ve been in the lifestyle a very long time, and was considered an edge player even before I met my husband a little over 15 years ago. We’ve been married 14 years, and with the trust you can build up over that period of time, I’ve a lot of experience to pull from when I construct a scene.

Hmmmm... love it! At least you have a handle on the situation, and know what you're talking about!

You have to write what you know. I’m glad you know about the lifestyle. That makes reading about the scenes more believable. When did you write your first book and how old were you?

I was around fourteen when I wrote my first book – on a Commodore 64, backed up on cassette tape. I gave it the super-imaginative title of “How to Learn to Juggle”. By the time I was fourteen I was juggling four balls, along with rings and clubs and a variety of other objects. I taught my dad to juggle, and several friends, which I assumed made me quite the expert.

I’ve never been able to juggle, so maybe you can teach me.

Sure you did! We both did... we do have children and families to run, lol.

What does your family think of your writing?

My mother thinks the words “butt” and “fart” are curse words and will stand up and leave the room if someone says either. She goes apoplectic over “ass”. She has no idea I write. My goal is to be open and non-judgmental with my own children, so they won’t need to keep important parts of their lives from me.

However, in my mom’s defense, she’s led a very sheltered life and is pretty naïve – she married my dad when they were both 18, and at 65 they are still together. I can’t imagine going my whole life and only having sex with one person. What if it was the best ever? You wouldn’t appreciate it; you’d have no way of knowing it was way better than most experience. And if it was horrible? You’d never have good sex. It seems to have worked for them, though. They began dating at fifteen, broke up for most of the summer they were sixteen, and have been together ever since.

Back to the question; my husband is very supportive. He’s not a fiction reader, if he’s reading something it’s likely to be a technical programming book. This means he doesn’t read my books, but he does ask me to either read him the scenes or email them to him (my choice). He’s also a good ear when I’m thinking through the basic storyline, so he has a good idea of the basics of each book.

It's difficult when you have to hide a fundamental part of yourself... but if anyone understands it's us here at The Menagerie! Why my DH is supportive, there are just some things he won't read... ever, lol.

The boys are very supportive of me as well. It’s nice to have that to fall back on when you need it. Even better when you don’t. The boys have read mine and I’ve emailed them to DH before. Quite an eye-opener. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I have a regular job during the day, so I write at night, once my kids are in bed. If I can start writing at 8:00, and keep at it until midnight, that’s four hours per night. I wake up at 6:30 in the morning, and six and a half hours is plenty of sleep for me these days. I also sometimes wake up early on the weekends, so I can get a few hours of writing in before the rest of the house is up. I often write in bed, with my laptop in my lap. If my husband is on his laptop, too, then the TV will be off. If he’s watching TV then I put on headphones and classical music. I can’t write to music with words, and after running various experiments, Bach seems to be my best background music.

My husband has claimed my Tuesday and Friday nights, so I’m usually otherwise occupied on those evenings. He’s pretty flexible with that, if I have something else to do on a Tuesday or Friday he’s good with switching days. It may not sound romantic to schedule playtime, but it works for us.

Must be nice. I write when I can get the time. Not often. Ask Kealie. We can’t coordinate writing time sometimes, to save our lives.

*SNORT* No kidding! It's like they KNOW when we want or need them to leave us alone, lol. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I want to show what a responsible, loving, BDSM relationship can look like. I want submissive men and women to understand they have a say – they are giving away their power, and they get to define the boundaries of what they are willing to give up. I often have reviewers comment on the negotiations in my books, and I appreciate that. Negotiations are important, especially when you’re playing at the levels my characters engage.

Safe, sane and consensual... gotta live by it or you can damage someone. I love it that you step out there like not many others do to say, "Look, it may be intense, but you need to set the rules!"

I’m glad you do. A lot of people who read BDSM don’t always know what is truly involved. I appreciate you showing what a loving relationship is. Thanks! What is your heritage?

I’m mostly Irish, with a few ancestors being from Germany. My hair is brown, but in the summer it fades to red tones instead of blond. I also have that famous Irish temper, and a love of whiskey and potatoes. Odd, isn’t it, how much our genes can affect who we are?

HA, you're in good company here! Irish-German from a large, loud, rambunctious family... My Big Fat Irish Wedding was more appropriate, lol.

I’m an Irish-German mutt. I love me some taters, but we're not much into drinking. Odd. Are you a morning person or a night person?

A night person. Before kids, I didn’t do mornings at all. I wasn’t capable of forming sentences within thirty minutes of awaking; any communication was done through grunts and glares, I’m told. My kids are morning people, so I’ve had to adapt and learn to be happy and joyful with them in the mornings. It’s a useful skill to have, but I’m still a night person at heart.

Having a BFF/writing partner who lives a three hour time change span away makes one a night person. Unfortunately, it also makes me sometimes more of a night owl than I’d like. Shrug. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Yeah, yeah... I'm not moving there! IT SNOWS THERE! Sorry, I'm still sane... :-P What were you doing at midnight last night?

Chaperoning sixty kids, fourth graders, locked into a science museum for the night. Sounds like the definition of something a masochist would enjoy, right? My husband and I both chaperoned though, and we both enjoyed it. Well, until around four this morning, when they kids were still going strong and I was fading fast.

Ummm... wow... I think you should be nominated for sainthood... or at least given an award, lol.

Wow, you have way more patience than me. I was sleeping. And good thing I was. I’d probably have hurt someone this morning. Those grunts and growls? Yeah, that was me. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?

I’m a vegetarian, so my strangest sounding food isn’t all that strange. In a restaurant in China I saw bamboo pith on the menu and tried it. (My husband’s response when I first commented on it was “I didn’t know bamboo did that.”)
It wasn’t all that strange tasting, and was surprisingly good. I learned once we were home it isn’t actually the pith of the bamboo plant, but a mushroom that grows on rotting bamboo. I’ve never seen it on a menu in the U.S, or in the Asian grocery stores we like to shop.

Huh... who knew!

I’m going to echo what your DH said. I didn’t know bamboo did that either. Although, I hate to say it. That sounds gross. I like plain ole pizza mushrooms. Do you like thunderstorms?

My answer before April of last year would have been an unqualified, “I love them.” However, after having very close calls with two tornadoes since April of last year, I now have to qualify that with, “Yes, as long as there are no tornado watches or warnings.”

One of our most memorable scenes happened in a remote vacation cabin in the mountains a few hours from home. There was storm raging while he flogged me on the screened in porch. We were in the mountains, and the sounds of the thunder reverberated back and forth between them. The energy of the storm became part of the scene. The flogging portion of the storm scene in Safeword: Matte is loosely built around that experience.

Mmmmmm.... sounds incredibly intriguing and mind-blowing! And thank you for sharing that with us!

Hey, at least you had fun and made it memorable. Thanks Candace. This has been a fun interview! Now for our readers. Do you want to know more about Safeword: Matte? Here you go!
Matte, pronounced mah-tay, is the word used in some forms of martial arts to stop a fight. It’s the Japanese word for stop or wait. Sam (short for Samantha) has made a hobby out of learning the various fighting disciplines, but she also happens to be a sexual submissive. What better safeword than matte?
Sam wants to find someone to submit to who she can’t beat in a fight. She’s tried to make it work with men from the scene who know nothing about fighting, but it doesn’t feel real to her – she needs someone who can truly control her. However, after dating from the fight scene and discovering not all guys like to spank their girlfriends, she’s decided to just back away from the whole dating thing for a while… until Fate decides to step in.
Warning: This title contains graphic language, consensual BDSM, bondage, and use of toys including crops, clamps, canes, and floggers.

Sunday Book Video ~ Subspecies by Mike Arsuaga

With Samantha “Sam” Johnson, Dr. Jim White, a 130-year-old Vampire, has the best sex of his life and it’s a shame she had to be his next victim. But she had a surprise for him. As a Lycan, she hunted him as he hunted her. After discovering each other’s secret, they cannot resist the physical attraction. Together they hunt and reach out to others of their kind using technology to form a support group. Sam and Jim become the first Lycan/Vampire pair bond.

As a mathematics professor and man of science, Dr. Jim rejects the ways and lore of old in favor of modern solutions that, if not acceptable to humans, allow Lycans and Vampires, The Subspecies, to live invisibly, because discovery is their worst fear.

The Subspecies are a mutation within the human genome. No more than 700 have been alive at one time. They cannot breed with humans or within their own group, but when the Sam and Jim get in a family way, a universe of possibilities opens for not only them, but all of The Subspecies with the promise of their lives being more than hunting, living in shadows, and fruitless mating.

Have You Ever...

Had one of those days where no matter what you do, you're wrong? Doesn't matter if you've more or less done nothing but keep to yourself, you can't seem to keep out of trouble?

I'm having one of those days. Seems even when I don't say anything, I say too much. If I do say something, it's the wrong thing. And if I get upset? Then I'm wrong. Plain and simple. I'm wrong.

Do you have those days? You don't set out to be wrong. Don't even set out to end up bawling your eyes out. But it happens.

I'm so there. I won't go into details, but suffice it to say that even when I had a valid point, the point got lost in the tidal wave of blame. It wasn't much fun. Still isn't, if you want me to be frank.

I'm attempting to work on a WIP, but it's hard to work when you can't focus. Seems the story doesn't focus either. Goes all over the place and meanders. The characters mirror my thoughts and well, right now it's not real rosy.

I could use a stiff drink and some tylenol, although not in that order. Don't even have to mix them. Oh well. I'll stop being depressing.

Have some eye candy. At least it's fat free.

Monday Author Interview with Tonya Kinzer!

Oi… talk about a long weekend! You forget how much sleep you don’t get with a new baby until you’re not getting the sleep! Add in Megan being on vacation, and I’m just a basket case… so bear with me today, lol. On the other hand, I’m glad that I was able to come in and hang out with Megan and our guest today! Where’s my caffeine? Oh, there’s a lovely Cabana Boy. Lovely lovely man has my caffeine right there! *sigh*

*Yawn* Who knew a vacation could be so tiring? This week, we’d like to welcome our friend Tonya Kinzer to the Menagerie! Thank you boys, I needed that drink. Fetch one for Tonya, will you? Thanks. Now, Tonya, will you tell us your latest news?

Book 4 is now available for your reading pleasure! I’m having so much fun with the series and my readers are loving each book a little more. Their Submissive Switch turned out to be the hottest book so far! Nick’s training of Sondra continues and she’s such a quick learner. Nick just isn’t aware of how much she’s grown until he sees her Switch! I love taking Nick and Sondra to Palm Springs to party with their friends as well as get closer as a couple.

I seriously love when a story does so much better than your expectations! Sounds like you’ve got yourself a winner… series, there, lol.

Don’t you just love it when a book comes together like that? Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

My hope is that women who read the series, and some men for that matter, will get brave enough to ask their partner for what they want to experiment with. By reading my series together, they could be more open in their own relationship and talk about what they want. If you don’t ask, you’ll always be hungry for what you’re not getting. Don’t blame your partner if they don’t truly understand what it is you want; it may be to try a blindfold - sensory deprivation can enhance so many sensations during sex! Light bondage can be fun but both parties must be in agreement to how much pain they’ll give each other.

So true… so many people think their partner is a mind reader simply because they’ve been together for a length of time… or they just can’t seem to articulate what they really need. I’m glad you feel your book can address that and maybe make some think.

Can’t argue with that logic. Who designed the covers?

I design my own covers and love it! Looking for just the right pictures is time consuming but part of the fun. I prefer to keep it sexy and not use total nudity on my covers…just a personal preference. I also do my own book trailers, post cards, websites, buttons, and do the same for other authors.

Wow, how awesome! I don’t know that I have the patience for one more form of artistic expression… even if I look at some covers and wonder if I could do that too. Not to mention the time, lol.

I’d love to have the time to do that. I’m so jealous. What does your family think of your writing?

My family and friends have no idea I write in this genre - after all, I’m the sweetheart next door who you’d never suspect of ever thinking about BDSM. Another reason I don’t use my OWN photo on my sites or on interviews. Hubby knows, but then…he’s The Boss! *wink* He’s who inspired me to begin writing in this genre because I used to write stories and send them to him. He loves reading erotica! Book two was the first story I wrote then I had to go back and write book one, after book two, so I could introduce the background of both characters.

Sooo… he’s your “research assistant”! Love it!

You’re a lucky girl The CB’s love to listen to what we
write, too. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

My readers love that I’ve introduced many of them to the softer side of BDSM and it’s helped them approach the very subject with their partners. I had another author tell me he bases books on their ‘orgasm level’ meaning 1-5 orgasms per reading! *blushing here* That has to be a new way to look at rating erotica! Don’t get me wrong, I realize that happens as we read hot scenes and I hope I’ve included enough to satisfy my readers! *wink*

LOL, that would be an awesome new rating system! “This book was so hot I give it 5 orgasms!” But, then again… what symbol would you use? My mind just went to all sorts of naughty images… lol.

Wow. Okay, that guy is a little...blunt. What are your current projects?

I’ve joined forces with a wonderful couple I met online last year and we’ve started a new site. I met erotic authors Brenda Woody and Steve Tindle on FaceBook and we now chat everyday thru Yahoo Messenger. We critique and mentor for each other to become better writers. Our new site is Naughty Readers Boudoir (http://naughtyreaders.com) and it’s keeping us very busy as we launch and get the site off the ground. In addition to the main site, we also have our blog where we’ve started weekly author interviews for our readers http://naughtyreaders.blogspot.com) We hope to make it a great reader’s site but we need more authors to join us so our readers have a good variety of books to look through as well as finding new authors. We do designs for covers, banner, buttons, post card, book marks, and trailers so take a peek at our site. Authors can also sign up to have their home page. We hope you join us so we can help promote you and your books.

Sounds like fun! I think we can come hang out sometime! What a fun endeavor, as well! It’s great when you find others who share the same interests as you do and are willing to go the long haul.

Sounds good. What animal do you think makes the best pet and why?

OMG….a good submissive, of course! *wicked laugh* There is a difference between a submissive and a slave. Truth be told, if I got punished as often as the Boss would like, I’d never be sitting down! We do have cats and they keep us entertained!

*snort* Heck, I don’t think any of us would be able to sit, or stand without fidgeting if our “Bosses” got their way. Cats are great companions… when they deign to honor you with their presence, lol.

Yanno, there is nothing wrong with a little punishment. Then again, the CBs would never get anything done either. Grin.

Now, we get to move onto, “Wait… where does writing come into these questions again?” questions! When you looked in the mirror this morning, what was the first thing you thought?

How did Phyllis Diller get in my bathroom!! I love the woman, she’s hilarious and her hair is crazy. My hair gets all cockeyed by morning and I have to fix it before The Boss sees me! LOL

I’m surprised he let you out of bed long enough to evaluate the damage!

I bet it wasn’t that bad. I’d also be willing to bet he loves it anyway. What were you doing at midnight last night?

I’m a night owl and normally don’t hit my pillow til after 1 am. Drives hubby nuts sometimes but I’ve always been a night owl….in the same breath, I’m NOT a morning person. He’s up at 6 am and I’m up at 7:30 or 8. He gets to the office early and I show up at noon…LOL…if I show up at all. Don’t get me wrong, during our busy season I do show up every day!

*snort* Night owls are some of our best friends… heck, we personify the stereotype… especially when we’re working on something together and since there’s a three hour time difference between the two of us… you get the picture.

Gotta do what you gotta do. What is your favorite animal?

I love cougars! The look in their eyes just says “Make my day!” They’re sneaky, they’re powerful and in great shape. I bet if they could talk, they’d be sassy like me!

Ooooohhhhh… cougars! I love the big cats, there’s just something about the way they move. All my favorite shifter characters are a big cat shifter of some kind. Not to mention the fact that one look in their eyes and you know they’re thinking, “The only reason you’re still there is because I feel you’re beneath my notice. But you should probably skedaddle before I change my mind.”

I love the one in the commercial for saving money. Love the way he licks his chops. It’s like he’s grinning. Have you ever cried during a movie? If yes, which one and why?

I’ve cried during three movies actually and that’s not like me. I remember watching The Champ a long time ago, The Titanic and….Message in a Bottle with Kevin Costner….*happy sigh*…love most of his movies!!

Okay, don’t kill me… but I seriously don’t like when there’s not a happy ending… I always want to rewrite movies when they don’t end the way I wanted them to. :::shrugs::: Just saying, lol.

Great movies! What is one thing scientists should invent?

OMG - A clone machine!! I’d be first in line ‘cause I need at least four more of me!! I’m rolling on the floor here - I want one of those machines so bad! Imagine what I could do - be at the office, be writing!

Suddenly images of Multiplicity with Michael Keaton are running through my head. My luck… I’d get the copy of the copy of the copy who kept calling me Steve. “She touched my pepe, Steve!” Now I’m rolling around on the ground laughing my ass off… sorry, lack of sleep… *snort* *giggle* Okay, ahem… I’m serious now. *snicker* Seriously!

Alrighty! Thank you so much for coming and hanging out with us today, Tonya! It was great fun, and I hope you come back again! You seem like the kind of gal who would appreciate making the Cabana Boys do sock races across the tiles… in nothing but socks!

Thanks again for being here!

Sex, Sex and More Sex!

I happened to be talking to a good friend of mine and we discussed television shows. There was a certain drool worthy actor on a particular show and she asked me (since I haven’t seen that particular set of episodes), why are books that are made into movies have more sex? The books are best sellers - garnered thousands of fans ..and yet...it's not good enough and they have more sex than the books... why?

I’m not sure if I want to mention the particular show we were talking about. I don’t want to prejudice anyone or really piss anyone off. I like my shows to be sexy. The hotter the better. But she makes a good point. If the book is hot, I mean HAWT, then isn’t that enough to go by? Or better yet, if the show/movie is based on the book, why add to it?

I see the point of the television show has more time to show what’s going on and can show things the book can’t. For example. In 13 episodes of a show, we can see more bits and pieces of the lives of say the secondary characters whereas in a book, we want to focus on the central characters. I get that.

But do the words ‘based on’ mean ‘deviate here please because the audience is made up of hornballs?’ Doesn’t to me. I’m a hornball. I’ll admit it. President of the club, actually. But I want a story in my sex. If they are having all-out, hotter than hottest sex and it’s JUST because they are hornballs...my interest wanes. I can watch porn if I want that. I want to see them being in love and caring about each other WHILE going at it like a couple of rabbits. And if the book does just that, then why wreck something good?

Because it has to be fantastic? Because it has to be over-thought? Because we as a culture NEED to see anatomy? I’m not sure.

Then again, we have the other stand point. The person getting credit for the screenwriting in many cases isn’t the author. Its someone else brought in to ‘enhance’ the script. Okay, if that’s the case, then that person needs paid and credit given. If the author doesn’t want the script to deviate from the book, then you’d think he/she should do the screenwriting. Maybe she doesn’t want to because she’s writing. Maybe he likes the changes the screenwriters and whoever else have made to it. Who knows. Or maybe still, the changes are like edits the editor might make—one person’s opinion on how to make it better. Just a thought.

I have this theory and while it could be wrong, it’s mine. Someone wrote the book. Someone else who had to edit it, must’ve loved it enough to contract it. Along the way, the book/story/whatever went through changes. It’s not the first draft as the author saw it—in almost all cases, it’s better. So how is the screenwriter/director/producer suggesting changes any different?

Because the fans like continuity. We like the commitment to what we read. Are we right? Are we wrong? You decide. I’d love to know what you think. And yes, Joe, there was the man in question. OOOh he is so yummy!

Monday Author Interview with Lara Valentine

HA HA! I’m not late today. Wait… dangit, I am late today, stupid daylight savings time. Grrrr… Sorry, welcome Lara! So glad you could come hang out with us today. Megan’s got her drink, and I’m waiting on my sweet CB to bring me mine. Grab a drink and we’ll get started!

Meh. Daylight savings time goofed me all kinds of of up. No kidlets today? You got a break! We can chat all day. Speaking of chatting, I’d like to welcome our author interviewee today, Lara Valentine. Thanks for being here. Let’s get started. What inspired you to write your first book?

I have always wanted to write a book. When I was in school one of my ambitions was to be a best-selling author. But life happens, and I went down a different road. In college I pursued what I considered to be more practical degrees in business and ended up in the software development world. But I never forgot my ambition. Recent events made me realize that life was too short not to go after what you want. So in April of 2011, I started writing Plenty To Come.

Isn’t that how it always works, lol. And I have to agree, life is definitely too short. You have to grab it with both hands and enjoy it.

Especially when you think you can’t do something, that’s when you really should. Hint, hint, Kealie. So yeah, you have to just do it. What is your favorite character you’ve written (published or not)? Why?

My favorite character so far is Jillian Miller. She is the best friend of the female heroine in Plenty To Come. She is extremely supportive, and very down to earth. In fact, I liked her so much I am working on her story right now. She needs love and a happily ever after.

You have got to love it when a secondary character waltzes onto the stage of your imagination and steals the scene! I’m a huge fan of secondary characters getting their own HEAs.

I love when the secondary characters demand. You get to take the story where you never expected to take it. I ended up with a whole series that way. What are your current projects?

Currently I am working on Plenty to Learn which is Jillian’s story in the Plenty, FL series. I am also finishing up the first book in a new series called The Chocolate and Martinis Book Club. It’s about five women who meet once a week and read erotic romance. Each one of them is going to find their own hot story in this series. Of course, with a happily ever after.

Sounds like fun! And seriously… who can live without a happily ever after?

Who can live without chocolate? Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Cassie Ames needs a new start in her life. She and best friend Jillian Miller leave their jobs and friends in icy Illinois for a new life in a small town in central Florida. The town believes in menageamous relationships and soon she is being pursued by handsome brothers Zach and Chase Harper. Unfortunately, her past catches up with her and her men and the whole town have to work together to keep Cassie safe.

Hmmm… “menageamous” huh? Has a rather nice ring to it, lol.

Sounds intriguing. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

I learned that starting a book was actually pretty easy. Finishing it is a whole other thing. The weekend I finally wrote The End, I really had to push myself to finish it.

I can definitely relate… shhhhhh, Megan, I know!

I said nothing. Besides, I know how hard it can be. And the shorter ones are the harder ones, I swear. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I want to say thank you! It is still unbelievable to me that people read something that I have written. I feel very blessed.

That’s always lovely to hear. Sometimes, I’m somehow expecting people to say, “Yeah, knew you’d like my stuff!” LOL, sorry… ahem…

Authors do have to have thick skins and large egos, but then again, it’s kinda cool when someone says they loved what you wrote. What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I have a day job and I am also a mother of a young son so I don’t have tons of free time. Organization is key for me. Once I get an outline, I try to write for at least 45 minutes each week night and a couple of hours on Saturday and Sunday.

*snort* Yeah, being a mom of a few little men and a teeny new one, I can seriously relate to not having tons of free time… wait, what exactly is free time again?

You don’t have free time. Just sayin. Being the mommy to a totlet, as well as two cats and two dogs makes my life... chaotic? Yeah. I’d love to be able to time manage that much. Doesn’t happen. What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I enjoy cooking, reading, and scrapbooking. As a family, we enjoy visiting Disney whenever we can.

Hey, we have some stuff in common! I enjoy eating, reading and card making… throw in jewelry making and dancing for some spice, lol.

I guess I’m the oddball. I like to read, I like to eat and I shouldn’t as much as I do, but I love me some racin’! What do you think makes a good story?

Great characters make a great story. You can have the best plot in the world, but if no one cares about the characters, the story is going to fall flat.

Amen, sistah!

Yup. If the characters aren’t characters, then shut it down. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I dreamed of being a rock star. When I drive my car, I truly am a rock star. Anyone driving next to me will see me rocking and singing as I sit in rush hour traffic.

Hahaha… too funny! I love singing and realizing the person next to me is singing the same song I am. That makes it a duet! Maybe one day, we’ll be doing a duet and not even know it, Lara!

And now, it’s time for our, “Wait a minute… how is this about writing?” questions!

There’s nothing wrong with singing to the steering wheel. I think Nickelback used that in a song. But yessir, it’s time for those questions that make you think and wonder. Plus, they are fun! Boxers, briefs, boxerbriefs…. Or commando? Why?

Boxers, baby. Not sure why. I just love a great body in boxers, especially flannel. Who doesn’t want to run their hands over flannel boxers?

LOL, I can see that… they are so soft, and when you compare that to a hard body underneath… whew… is it hot in here?

Plus you get that nice mystery to it. You don’t know exactly what’s under there and you get to guess. Yum!What were you doing at midnight last night?

Sleeping! If I don’t get at least 7 hours, you really don’t want to deal with me.

*snort* Seven hours would be soooooo nice! :::eyes glaze over in jealousy:::

Seven straight hours would be nice. What’s a saying you use a lot? Where did it originate from ?

Not sure where it originated from but here it is: “When all is said and done, a lot more is said than done.”

hahahahahaha! So true!

Better than the ones we use. Ahem. Just sayin’. Have you ever cried during a movie? If yes, which one and why?

Every single, damn time I watch The Way We Were I cry. I know what’s coming and cannot help myself. It’s heartbreaking that they didn’t get their happily ever after.

Oooohhhh… Robert Redford! Yeah, that ending sucks big green monkey weenie! What? It does!

It does, but putting it that way is interesting. What is one thing scientists should invent?

Exercise in pill form.

Hmmm… but then you’d have to remember to take the pills… and it would STILL be a chore. I’ll stick with my dancing and pilates, thanks. :-D

Snort. Pilates proves I have no balance. What stereotype would you label yourself as?

I am your typical control freak. I like to make the vacation plans, dinner reservations, control the thermostat and the remote control.

Hmmm… we don’t know anyone like that!

Nope. Don’t know anyone like that at all. Do you like thunderstorms?

I live in Florida and we have some really amazingly beautiful thunder and lightning storms. So yes, I like them as long as we don’t lose power. (That’s the control freak part coming out in me).

I don’t think any of us like to be without electricity… ask Megan, we both get a bit twitchy if we’re out of contact for too long, lol.

That’s putting it mildly. But when you share a brain, it happens. If you could wish for anything, what would you wish for?

Health and happiness for my son.

That’s always a good one! Great, now I have that Rascal Flatts song in my head… “My wish for you… your dreams stay big, your worries stay small and you never have to carry more than you can hold.” *sigh* Sorry, now it’s stuck in your head! And on that note… here's the latest from Lara Valentine!

Here's a little bit about Lara!

I've been a dreamer my entire life. So, it was only natural to start writing down some of those stories that I have been dreaming about.

Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I fall in love with all of my characters. They are perfectly imperfect with the hopes, dreams, desires, and flaws that we all have. I want them to overcome obstacles and fear to get to their happily ever after. We all should. Everyone deserves their very own sexy, happily ever after.

I grew up in the cold, but beautiful plains of Illinois. I now live in Central Florida with my handsome husband - who's a real, native Floridian - and my son whom I have dubbed "Louis the Sun King." They claim to be supportive of all the time I spend on my laptop, but they may simply be resigned to my need to write stories.

When I am not working at my conservative day job or writing furiously at my laptop, I enjoy relaxing with my family or curling up with a good book.

I love hearing from readers! Here's my site:

Hold on My Heart

I wasn't really sure what to write about either, mostly because I've been sick for the past couple days. The CB's have made me feel VERY good while I'm recovering. Stupid colds anyway.

I thought I'd loan them out to Kealie since she's been away awhile and I'm sure they are tired of my sick butt.

Anyway, since I've not been feeling my best and have been sleeping, it's been nice. My brain is fuzzy, but not as fuzzy as normal. (Well the normal I've lived in for the last couple days.) I started thinking about the final story in my Glow Band series. I don't really want to end it, I mean, I love hanging out with these characters. Plus, doing extra research on punk/rock bands has been a blast. But all good things must come to an end. Glow series included.

So I'm up to Hiram and Slash's story. And the reason why I titled the post Hold On My Heart. Hiram serves as one of the body guards for the band. He kicks some serious butt. He also happens to be the brother of the lead singer. Far as he's concerned, he's got no musical ability and no super qualities to him. Don't get me wrong, doesn't mean he's a boring guy. He's 6'6" and weighs 220. You're not gonna miss him in a room. But what he does have his a heaping helping dose of shyness. He can deal in social situations if a) emotions aren't involved and b) he can beat the crap out of someone. What he doesn't realize is that Slash is very much attracted to him because he's not pretentious and he's authentic - when he finally says something. Hiram is also a realist. He's seen his brother find his counterpart. He witnessed the disgustingly sweet way his sister found her counterpart. He knows it happens. What he's not about to do is fall for a guy who plays drums in a punk band and is willing (or so he thinks) to drop his drawers for any piece of ass to walk past.

I'm not hearing a lot from Hiram other than he's happy to bag it, tag it and keep his heart nice and tucked away. Slash has been the one talking to me most. He keeps telling me he's got to hold on and that his heart, though ready and willing to go to Hiram, is going to have to wait a little bit.

So that's where I'm at. Working on them, thinking about what they will do and let me make them do. Thoughts?

CBs? I'm in need of refreshment!

Rock On... Or Country On?

I'm here, I'm here! I know, Tuesday is my usual day, but Megan and I thought we'd hang out here together today... much easier to head out on the town from one place, don'tcha think? I haven't seen her yet, so I guess it's just me and the CBs for now... ;-P

I seriously had a hard time thinking of anything to talk about today. What do you mean you can't believe that? I am so mild-mannered, and quiet and... yeah, sorry, even I don't believe that one, lol.

Okay, in all seriousness... I know it's something I talk about a lot, but I love music. Lots and lots of music. I'm not like one friend who has more albums than he can really count, but I do have a lot of music. I have everything from Classical and Opera to Goth Metal and Harder rock with a little Country and even some Musicals soundtracks thrown in there too. Not a day goes by that I'm not found humming or singing something I heard, or even found with headphones on while I do chores. Even my writing is influenced by music... heck MEGAN'S writing is influenced by music I hear, lol. There have been times I've called her after hearing a song and asked her how come her characters were in my head telling me they like that song.

While I am a visual writer (I just love me some inspiration posted in front of me when I write... or just for the hell of it, but hey... can you blame me?), I do have stories inspired by songs I hear... Heck, I have an entire series of stories inspired by several bands I love and the music they make. I even have playlists on my iPod that are labeled with specific names of stories I am working on. It might come from having danced my whole life... who knows. All I do know is that music is integral to my life more than just dancing or liking music. Below is a song that has been the inspiration, and that I listen to all the time.

I know, I know, it's kind of a silly video, but the song is what I'm rockin', lol. So, how 'bout you? What does music mean to you? Annoyance or essential? What's rockin' your MP3 player? I'd love to know... I'm always lookin' for new music! Until next time... Rock on! :-D

Monday Author Interview with Gabrielle Bisset

:::Kealie skids through the door, hands fat baby over to Cabana Boy, along with diaper bag and kicks off shoes:::
:::kiss kiss to baby… kiss kiss to CB:::
:::drops down on the couch next to Megan:::
I’m sorry, I’m sorry to be late! Welcome, welcome, Gabrielle. So glad you could join us this morning!

You’re always a little behind, but we love you, Kealie. So Gabrielle, tell us your latest news?

My latest news is that I began a new paranormal romance series entitled the Sons of Navarus, and I'm scheduled to release the first two books this year. The series technically begins with Blood Avenged, the novel I released in December.
Each book will be a stand-alone, but it will also work within the series. It's got vampires, power struggles in the vampire world, and very steamy sex. What more could one ask for?

Seriously, I couldn’t ask for more! Congrats on such an awesome undertaking.

Absolutely. I know how hard a series can be. Do you have a specific writing style?

It's interesting. Now that I encounter so many other writers, I realize I have a very odd style compared to them. Or maybe I'm just meeting pansters, but I'm quite ordered in my writing. I begin with an outline that can take days to create. It's always very specific and details every major plot point. Then I begin writing at the beginning and move through the story. If I struggle at some point, I don't jump to another part of the story, even if I have ideas for that other part. Others have told me that this would drive them insane and kill their creativity, but it's just the way I am. If I allow myself to jump around, I'll never get back to that part I was stuck on. I know me. Without a great deal of discipline, I'd be all over the place.

LOL, I’m one of those pantsers myself, and I have that exact problem. Granted, I don’t jump ahead, but I do have moments where I wonder where the heck I’m going with something. I admire your discipline. When it comes to dance, I’m disciplined (or I used to be anyway), but writing… not so much, lol.

I plow ahead and skip when I get stuck. Love those comment bubbles. Hate when I forget WHY I needed one. How did you come up with the title?

It took a while to get Blood Avenged's title. Looking back, I guess it shouldn't have since it's about one man's revenge against a fellow vampire that's been brewing for almost 400 years. But for the longest time, the book had no title, which I find very frustrating. If I could, I'd have a title the minute I began writing each book, but sometimes it doesn't turn out that way.

Again with the discipline! I’ve found myself just saving something as “Cowboy” or “Alpha” because of one character until I can figure out an appropriate title. And yeah, that title seems to be very apropos.

You’re waiting on me to kick your butt on Cowboy. Just sayin’. Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.

I have great friends who have been there for me every step of the way. They tell me they're living vicariously through me and my new career. They really have been so fabulous. I can't count how many times they've been there when I was frustrated about something or when I wanted to share a big milestone in my writing. I'd be lost without them and their support.

Yup, it’s awesome to have friends that help like that. I can’t say how many times Megan or I have turned to each other when we’ve written ourselves into a corner, “Ummm… help?” It makes this insane writer’s life so much easier when you have a friend or friends to turn to. Wow! How sappy did I just sound? LOL

Not to mention the fact that I am really, really good at writing myself into corners. I just wonder why I can’t write myself into a corner with a CB? Do you see writing as a career?

Although I still work my day job as a college history teacher, I do see writing as a career. I'd love for it to be my only career sometime soon, but for now, it's what I do in addition to what supplies me with health insurance.

*snort* Hey, don’t knock the health insurance.

No kidding. Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Blood Avenged stemmed from a novella I wrote entitled Vampire Dreams. In that story, Vasilije was the villain, and a delicious one at that. I knew almost immediately that I would write him his own story, and from that came Blood Avenged. Here's the blurb:

I am everything you desire. I am vampire.

Powerful and manipulative, Vasilije does as he pleases. A vampire beholden to no one, he takes what he desires, drinking deeply the pleasures this life has to offer.

When one of his own is staked, Vasilije must travel to New Orleans to exact his revenge. There he meets Sasa, a beautiful woman who arouses him like no other has for centuries. Vasilije’s need for vengeance is equaled only by his passion for her, but what he finds in his revenge is just the beginning...

The story is an erotic paranormal romance and just the beginning part in the blurb refers to the fact that the Sons of Navarus series begins with the end of Blood Avenged.

Sounds delicious!

My TBR list grows each time we do an interview! Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Fight scenes. I always struggle with physical fight scenes. My ex is one of my beta readers specifically for this reason. All my other betas focus on the relationships and other issues in romance, but he is there particularly for the physicality issue. It's quite amusing when he says, "You do know you have this character doing something that in his position is physically impossible, don't you?" I always laugh and say, "Well, that's why I have you read these things. So what do I have to do to make him less like Stretch Armstrong and more able to fight like this?"

LOL, I find myself doing that with more than fight scenes! “Wait, where is his hand again?” And wow, you have a much better relationship with your ex than I would want with mine, lol.

I’m not saying a word. I don’t want Kealie to show me she can fight like the MMA guys. Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

For Blood Avenged, I traveled to New Orleans around Halloween, and what a time that was! I took tons of pictures to refer to as I was in edits, and every scene set in New Orleans was one I visited. I'd love to travel for the next book in the Sons of Navarus series, Blood Betrayed, since it's set in France. That would be incredible.

Ooooohhhhhh…. France would be amazing! Hey, we could be more friends living vicariously through you! Take us with you… on your laptop!

I dunno, I’m rather interested in The Big Easy over Halloween. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I love hearing from readers, and their comments really make me see the stories in a different way. For example, I never thought my writing was truly erotic until I started hearing that the stories were "smokin' hot". I honestly thought they were just paranormal romance, but my readers showed me I was writing much steamier scenes than I thought. Go figure. And here I thought I was going to have to turn the heat up a bit. :)

Hey, you won’t hear us complain if you decide to turn the heat up even more… just sayin’.

And now… our “Ummm… what does this have to do with writing?” questions!

This is when we pull out the fun questions. Do you have any strange handwriting habits, like capitalizing all your “r”s or dotting your “I”s with heart (or anything like that)?

I handwrite my stories first, and that means a lot of handwriting in a 300+ page book. Years of parochial school when I was a child means I have very clear and neat handwriting. I think my strangest handwriting habit occurs with my name. I always make the first letter of my first and last names much bigger than the other letters. I get that from my father, who did the same thing but left handed.

I like to write out scenes every now and then… something about the flow of writing it out makes you slow down and think about the words you really want to use. But the whole thing? I’d get serious hand cramp.

Hand cramp in your situation would suck. The baby would not appreciate it. I’ve been known to write out the beginning of a scene on paper... then forget where I went. Yeah, I have a LOT of notebooks. Speaking of men (Like that intro? Totally off topic – grin) Boxers, briefs, boxerbriefs…. Or commando? Why?

I'm a fan of a man in boxerbriefs, but commando works just as well. I think both are incredibly sexy, but I've heard from men that commando sometimes is a bit uncomfortable. I always think to myself when they say that, "But the men in romantic fiction never have a problem." Real life is rarely as sexy as fiction.

Awwww… a goyle after my own heart! And yeah, that’s why it’s called “escapism”… I still love that my hubby considers them “instruction manuals” instead of unrealistic expectations on my part. I know, smack me… please! ;-P

It’s unrealistic, but as I’ve tried commando, it gets itchy. I’ve also been told there is a lot to say for that barrier from the zipper. What’s a saying you use a lot? Where did it originate from ?

You can't plant peas and get corn. I have no idea where it came from, but the person I share my office with at my day job is from Hawaii, and she'd never heard it before I said it. But I can't think of anything more true. You can do many things to alter who you are, but you can't fundamentally change who you are.

Huh… that sounds almost like a southernism… just not one I’ve heard before. Granted, I haven’t heard them all, but that’s a great one!

It’s very true though. Dad always said he’d do things when the corn grew in the soybeans. Boy did he have to pay up when he had a field with last year’s corn growing in the soybeans. Soybeans has nothing to do with pizza, but what is your favorite pizza?

I love pizza with sausage and green peppers. The flavors just mix so well, and with a great sauce that's not too sweet, it's just one of my favorite foods to eat.

MMMMmmmmm…. Pizza…. *sigh* Sorry.. ahem…

You would drool over pizza. Ahem, CB? Yes, Kealie needs something to drool on. Thank you. What stereotype would you label yourself as?

I'm a type-A person. If I do something, it's 100% and it's done yesterday. I've been like this since I was a child. If I say I'm going to do something, then hell or high water, it will get done. I put far more pressure and stress on myself than anyone else does.

Hey we know a couple of those types!!! People like me and Megan just irritate those types though… sorry ahead of time!

And we do well at irritating. Are you a morning person or a night person?

I'm very much a night owl. I hit my stride sometime after dark, so having to work during the day isn't great. That said, I love that time in very early morning when no one else is up and I can get so much done.

Sounds like me! Granted, lately, I’m up with little man, so it’s not all by my lonesome, but I can totally relate to the night owl!

And then there’s me who stays up until it’s ridiculous because I’m waiting on you and the little man. Nice. Do you like thunderstorms?

Sometimes. The storms that make me think my windows are going to shatter aren't favorites of mine, but a nice thunderstorm in the summertime that breaks up the heat and humidity of the day is refreshing. Thunderstorms are definitely a show of what nature can do, so in that way, I like them too.

I like a good thunderstorm… from the safety of my home.

Safety is good. Okay, so you want to know more about Gabrielle Bisset? Look no further than right below!
